Say hello to: ANCHISAURUS

ANCHISAURUS (ANG-kee_sawr-us) "Near Lizard" (Greek anchi- = near or close to + sauros = lizard, because it was an early dinosaur and was close to the REPTILIAN ancestors) Sometimes called YALEOSAURUS.

A PROSAUROPOD resembling AMMOSAURUS but with narrower FEET and a slightly smaller head. It was about 8 feet (2.5 m) long. Anchisaurus was basically QUADRUPEDAL but may sometimes have run two-legged. It may have eaten both plants and meat. FOSSILS of this dinosaur have been found in Connecticut, Arizona, South Africa, and Germany. It probably lived all over the world from the Late Triassic to Early Jurassic times. It is one of the oldset dinoaurs in geological time to be discovered in North America, and it is known from very complete material. At one time it was thought that this dinosaur was a THEROPOD, because of its thin walled bones and serrated TEETH.

Classification: Prosauropoda, Sauropodomorpha, Saurischia
