BRACHIOSAURUS (BRAK-ee-o-sawr-us) "Arm Lizard" (Greek brachion = arm + sauros = lizard, referring to its long forelegs)

A gigantic Jurassic SAUROPOD, one of the largest known land animals. A complete skeleton found in Tanzania, now at the Humboldt University Natural History Museum in East Berlin, stands 40 feet (12 m) long. A live Brachiosaurus probably weighed 70 or 80 tons (63.5 to 72.6 metric tons). Its body was more massive than that of any other sauropod. Its neck was 28 feet (8.5 m) long, but its TAIL was short. Unlike most sauropods, Brachiosaurus had longer forelegs than hind legs. Its shoulders towered 19 feet (5.8 m) above the ground, higher than a giraffe is tall.

This four-legged dinosaur roamed the forests of the Jurassic world, eating the tops from tall trees. Contrary to popular belief, it could not have lived in deep water. it would not have been able to breathe. The pressure of the water on its lungs would have been too great.

The remains of Brachiosaurus have been found in the western United States as well as in Africa and Europe.
