Dilophosaurus with nest

DILOPHOSAURUS (dy-LOH-fo-sawr-us) "Two-crested Lizard" (Greek di = two + lophos = crest + sauros = lizard, because it had two CRESTS)

A Late Triassic or Early Jurassic THEROPOD with two high crests running lengthwise along the top of its large head. Dilophosaurus was a medium-size dinosaur, it was about 20 feet (6m) long. This BIPEDAL meat eater had short arms and powerful legs built for SPEED. There were three fingers on its HANDS and four toes on its FEET (however, only three toes reached the ground). Its fingers and toes were armed with sharp CLAWS. The FOSSILS of this dinosaur were found in Arizona. It is known from a nearly complete skeleton. Although this dinosaur was originally classed as a CARNOSAUR, it is now thought to be a large COELUROSAUR.

Classification: Coelurosauria, Theropoda, Saurischia
